Listed for you here is an exceptional John Batterson Stetson silverbelly hat with original pin and box, size 7 1/2. Purchased approximately 1960-1970s from Cassidy's Western Outfitters in San Francisco, maybe worn twice, like new. This style Stetson hat is from the Gun Club Series, the Casino with natural woven jute and leather trim, feathers and Stetson pin. Very classy. Excellent dress accessory for wedding attire. Most people are not familiar with the exquisite history of one of the most famous hat companies, and one of the only hat companies for most men. John Batterson Stetson 8th of 12 children, May 5, 1830 to February 18, 1906 manufactured hats the way his father taught him. After a spell with tuberculosis and a look at traveling, John Stetson returned to Philadelphia and set up his 9 acre 25 building factory with 5,000 employees, whom he offered benefits of health care, a safe work place, a park, and housing. By 1915 nine years after his passing his 5,400 employees were turning out 3.3 million hats. Quite a feat in the 1900s. John B. Stetson gave much back to the community, by donating almost all of his money to charitable organizations, building grammar, high schools, and colleges including Temple and Stetson Universities. He helped establish the YMCA in Philadelphia, cofounded Sunday Breakfast rescue mission in 1878 a homeless shelter and soup kitchen still used today. His donations to the DeLand Academy were very generous and in 1889 it was renamed Stetson University. In 1900 Stetson University founded the first law school in Florida. John B. Stetson owned a mansion masterpiece of 8,000 sq. ft. a combination of Gothic, Tudor and Moorish styles which is open to the public for tours. John B. Stetson's passing in 1906 laid him to rest in West Laurel Hill Cemetery. John B. Stetson was an incredible individual, with a living legacy to this day.
