Amazing short history for the Maling Pottery Company, a great longer version is available on Wikipedia. The name of Maling Pottery derives from the French surname of Malin. The family were Protestant Huguenots (a religious group of French Protestants) that fled from their native land to avoid religious persecution. They settled in England, Sunderland 1762 and later in Newcastle upon Tyne 1817 and prospered in a variety of business enterprises coal, shipping, timber and pottery. Over the centuries the "g" was added to their name of Malin to make it Maling. Their driving interest in pottery lay more in their survival rather than design which came later in 1890 with the hire of the first in-house designer. Within a few years the design and quality was sold by prestigious stores as Harrods of London. By 1920 other designers were recruited from Staffordshire Potteries and the exquisite designs continued to the closure in 1963.
